This line-up is about as classic as it gets. Truly a roster of living legends from Rakim and Big Daddy Kanye to EPMD and Whodini. Hip-hop”s baddest ladies MC Lyte and Chicago’s own Da Brat will rock the stage too.
Rakim is the lyrical half of legendary hip-hop duo Erik B & Rakim, whose debut album Paid In Full is considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. No Erik B for this show but Rakim – often considered to be one the greatest MCs of all time (many put him at #1) will be on hand to run through his extensive discography of classic cuts. Erik B & Rakim were recently nominated to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Stream their classic cut “Don’t Sweat The Technique” below.
EPMD is made up of MC Erik Sermon (E) and producer Parrish Smith (PMD). The duo are considered to be one of the greatest of all time and are early pioneers of hip-hop in NYC. They group has been together 25+ years (with a few break-ups) and are known for their party raps and knack for sampling funk music. Their debut album Strictly Business and follow-up Unfinished Business are certified classics.
Big Daddy Kane is the definition of a legend. Many consider him to be the most influential MC – not just for his rhymes but his confident image of being the best there is. It’s been said that a young Jay-Z often served as BDK’s hypeman and was an early mentor. Simply put, he is the best there is when it comes to all aspects of being a rapper. Incredibly sharp delivery, unbelievable stage presence and being as cool as they come.
MC Lyte is with out a doubt one of the best lady MCs of all time. Her debut album Lyte As Rock is often included in many Top 100 Hip-Hop albums of all time lists. MC Lyte continued to put about music into the early 2000s and has also made several apperances as an actress.
Chicago’s own Da Brat is the first female MC to have an album sell more than 1 million copies. The album was her debut Funkdafied, filled with Top 10 hits. Unfortunately, Da Brat is more known for her legal troubles, Da Brat will have been released just under a year from this concert day.
Whodini is a hip-hop trio from Brooklyn, New York. Pioneers of hip-hop and R&B with classic hits and a dope discography of albums. The trio have made several come backs and are still rockin’ it in 2012.
