[WHAT Cold Grums, Congress, & React Presents the Rock Boxx Tour featuring a slew of fun, nostalgic and talented artists. Among the headliners is a virtual mash-up pioneer, DJ Z-Trip. Zach Sciacca uses turntables, drums, a sampler and an 808 to produce dynamically rhythmic tunes, like his track “King Taco”. In 2010, he worked on the soundtracks for DJ Hero, DJ Hero 2, and EA Sports MMA. Catch his unique sound when he hits Chicago!
Evolving from jazz rap and alternative hip-hop, the trio of Kelvin Mercer, David Jude Jolicoeur, and Vincent Mason combine to make up De La Soul. After winning a Grammy in 2006 for their work with The Gorrilaz on their hit single “Feel Good Inc”, the band continued to make classic hip-hip features. If you simply cannot wait to see the group in July, head over to Summer Camp this weekend!
Nosaj Thing, an up and coming talent, will also be performing along with the influential Daddy Kev. See what the Rock Boxx tour is all about & transport yourself to an era of timeless music. *Cue head bob*
RJD2 CrowdNoize Review- Master of the Party
Electric as always, The Mid was the perfect venue to feature last night’s monster set. DJ Intel and Big Once were just heating up when I arrived at the start of the show. I wasn’t sure what to expect from these guys buy their high-energy turntablism, featuring a mixture of funk electro, dubstep, and drum and bass was more than enough to get me on the dancefloor. Then, BRC took things to another level, filling the room with heavy bass and lots of dubstep. He laid down some of this year’s illest tracks to amp up the audience.
As my friend put it last night, “I F****** LOVE dubstep!”
Launching into his set with one of my favorite tracks, “A Beautiful Mine” (featured on the TV show Mad Men), RJD2 commanded attention as he took center stage. Showered in purple and blue high-beam lights, the crowd quickly morphed into a single unit of dancing, swaying, raging fans. Snaking my way to the front, I got to see first-hand how this colossal master of the dance party puts together his futuristic tunes. When “Ghostwriter” came on, those standing by the bar made their way to the dancefloor. Hands flew into the air while strobe lights exploded to accompany the frenzy of sound. And even when seated, as my friend John was, you still felt the music. He pointed out to me half way through the concert, “Dude, there are subs in the bench seats. This whole place is booming.” That is no lie. The Mid’s new sound system is especially powerful- perfect for shows like this.
Behind RJD2, a giant screen featured a range of random, yet visually stimulating images from booty-poppin ladies to street views to all sorts of out-of-the-box scenes. So random, yet so awesome. Hope he plans on coming back to Chi city real soon!

[WHAT]
Making his way to Chicago for a second time this year, RJD2 is set to perform at The Mid in the 4-Table-Bday Jam. Two years ago, RJD2 established his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections. Distributed by The Orchard, his new full length The Colossus was released in January 2010 on his new label. Cranking out memorable tracks since 1993 upon receiving his first turntables, RJD2 has produced epic tunes such as A Beautiful Mine, Ghostwriter, and The Horror.
I attended Ramble John “RJ” Krohn’s last concert in Chicago, which was fantastic to say the least. Half way through the set, he changed out of street clothes into a full-on robot suit. With keyboard in hand, he wowed the crowd with a rendition of Super Mario Bros. This turntablist must be seen in action to fully appreciate his skills. Domo arigato!

[WHAT]
Black Thought has been one of the most exciting and consistent rappers in the last decade. Did we mention he spits for the best band on the planet? The verbal leader of The Roots crew swings through The Mid for a rare solo show on April Fools Day. You already know Black Thought doesn’t mess around. Expect hip-hop at its Roots.
The local talent is heavy on this one too. Be sure to catch the very talented Add-2. Sets and performances from Major Taylor, DJ Intel, DJ RTC and Demchuk.
